Poetry Daily

By Poetry Dailyreleased on:2010-06-12T11:54:50Z

Welcome to Poetry Daily for iPhone! Poetry Daily is an anthology of contemporary poetry. Each day, we bring you a new poem from new books, magazines, and journals, chosen from the work of a wide variety of poets to provide you with a window on the broad range of poetry offered annually by publishers large and small.

When you open a poem, you can find more information about the poet and published source of the poem by clicking on the poem's title. To have better control of the text of a poem, click on the fullscreen icon in the upper right corner, where you can turn the iPhone to a landscape view and control the size of the text. (For long-lined poems, it can be challenging to replicate the design of the poet. For such poems, the smaller the text, the more true the poem is to the original line breaks.)

You can use Poetry Daily for iPhone to save your favorite poems. The "Favorites" tab will hold the poem on your iPhone, giving you a chance to get to know the poem, or to have the poem in hand when you visit your local bookstore to find the poet's collection.

Check out Poetry Daily's Newsroom for daily updated news of poetry gathered from a variety of news sources around the web, and its Twitter feed for items of particular interest.

Verses - The Poetry Game

By Nicholas Iannonereleased on:2010-07-09T02:08:45Z

Ever wonder what it would be like to mash-up a Shakespeare poem with a Hip Hop Song? Verses is a new iPhone and iPad app that puts a fresh spin on a cherished classic: refrigerator magnet poetry. We built this app to set your creativity ablaze with Verses's limitless word mixing possibilities that allow you to become a kind of dictionary DJ. After creating a poem out of your own personal mix of dictionaries, you can send your creation to friends via email or publish it in your Facebook photo album! (network connectivity required)

Arranging words into your own poetry is much easier and smoother (and thus more enjoyable) using Verses, as opposed to the original "real life" fridge magnets. But even more enjoyable is the pleasure of sharing your poetic creations with friends. With the click of a button, you can publish your poem to Facebook (assuming you're logged in). Then ALL of your friends can see your creativity, not just the ones who happen to be in standing in front of your fridge (Facebook account and network connectivity required). Plus you can email your poetry directly to your friends, all without ever leaving the app. You can also save your poetry to your device's photo album.

Verses comes with 4 dictionaries, including:

Old School Words
New School Words
'The' Dictionary
If Ands Or Buts Dictionary

You can also buy premium dictionaries for an additional cost, which can add even more flavor and character to your poems. Premium dictionaries are available as optional in-app purchases and include:

Hip-Hop Dictionary
Beatnik Dictionary
60's Dictionary 1
60's Dictionary 2
LOL-tionary
Sci-Fi Dictionary
Shakespeare Dictionary
19th & 20th Century Dictionary

We've also added Achievements that will track your progress and keep a tally of your own personal "Poetry Score."

Poetry Everywhere

By WGBHreleased on:2010-04-01T07:00:00Z

Celebrate poetry with an iPhone app! Now poetry lovers have a new way of experiencing great poems with a free app.

POETRY EVERYWHERE is a collection of short poetry videos featuring contemporary poets reading their own works, introduced by Garrison Keillor. It's pure poetry! With easy navigation, this app is a sure way to provide reflection and inspiration.

"What makes a good poem? I'd say stickiness, a kind of memorability....You hear it and a day later some of it is still there in your brain. I think a poem is "good" if it's memorable, reciteable, and it's accessible. There are many good poems out there you don't get a chance to see or hear and now Poetry Everywhere is giving people just that opportunity." - Garrison Keillor

With selections ranging from Billy Collins and Ted Kooser to Lucille Clifton, Maxine Kumin, and Marilyn Chin, the POETRY EVERYWHERE app is a fresh take on poetry. Enjoy a broad spectrum of voices and gain an even deeper appreciation of this timeless art form.

About the Project:
WGBH (wgbh.org) and David Grubin Productions, in association with the Poetry Foundation, created this project to reach new audiences with the power of great poetry, and to increase poetry's presence on television and the Web.

In addition to our website, www.pbs.org/poetry, the videos will appear on local public television stations. We hope this project offers moments of
excitement and even revelation throughout your day.

Daily Tang Poetry!

By Dream With Usreleased on:2010-07-17T10:27:23Z

This apps will update each day, so that each day will have a different poetry!!!

History of Tang poetry:

Tang poetry refers to poetry written in or around the time of and in the characteristic style of China's Tang dynasty, (June 18, 618 - June 4, 907, including the 690-705 reign of Wu Zetian) and/or follows a certain style, often considered as the Golden Age of Chinese poetry. According to a compilation, the Quantangshi, created under the Kangxi emperor of the Qing Dynasty, there were almost 50,000 Tang poems written by over 2,200 authors. During the Tang Dynasty, poetry continued to be an important part of social life at all levels of society. Scholars were required to master poetry for the civil service examinations, but the art was theoretically available to everyone. This led to a large record of poetry and poets, a partial record of which survives today. Two of the most famous poets of the period were Du Fu and Li Bai.

What are you waiting for? Download it and learn about Chinese culture in an easy way!!
